Mumbai's Infrastructure Crisis: When civic feedback Fall Silent

Published 18 June 2026Share on X (Twitter)

Mumbai accounts for roughly 6% of India's GDP and is home to 20 million people in the metropolitan region. Its civic infrastructure — roads, drainage, public transport, open spaces — lags decades behind this economic contribution.

The BMC Problem

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is India's richest municipal body with an annual budget exceeding Rs 55,000 crore. This budget has funded continuous road relaying (Mumbai roads are reportedly relaid more frequently than any other city globally), flyover construction, and the Coastal Road project. Yet basic civic services in inner-city areas and outer suburbs remain patchy.

Monsoon Flooding: The Annual Failure

Every monsoon since 2005, Mumbai floods. The Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drainage (BRIMSTOWAD) project has been expanded and revised multiple times and remains incomplete. Meanwhile, over 40% of Mumbai's stormwater drainage capacity is encroached upon by slums and commercial establishments.

Slum Rehabilitation: 70 Years and Counting

Over 40% of Mumbai's population lives in informal settlements. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme has created a patchwork of redeveloped and unreachable settlements. civic feedback from SRA rehabilitation buildings — substandard construction, no water pressure in upper floors, electrical failures — constitute a significant share of Mumbai's civic feedback volume.
